A neuropsychological evaluation is a test measuring how well a person’s brain is working. The abilities tested include reading, language usage, attention, learning, processing speed, reasoning, memory, problem-solving, motor functioning, mood, personality and more.
While standard psychological testing can diagnose a condition like ADHD based on behavior, neuropsychological testing can specify the origin, severity, and development of a disorder. Then, the neuropsychologist can customize recommendations to create a specific treatment plan.
Typically, Neuropsychological tests are used to figure out whether your problems are caused by any of the following:
Disease, such as Alzheimer’s
Brain Injury
Emotional disorders, such as depression, anxiety
Normal brain changes related to getting older
Other disease or medical issues that could cause changes in thinking, memory, or motor function such as stroke or Parkinson’s disease
Testing may take 3 to 6 hours. It depends on how at ease you are and how quickly you and the technician can go through all the questions. You’ll get breaks during the session. In some cases, you might need to make more than one visit.
